Home / Uncategorized / oldchilli runs hot, wins 11/18/14 Super Tuesday, $101K; Joaquín Melogno 2nd

Joaquín “elmelogno4″ Melogno of Uruguay is a regular on the Latin American Poker Tour with several cashes including final tabling LAPT5 Uruguay where he finished fourth. Melogno is also a regular at big final tables on PokerStars, having just won the Sunday Million five months ago. He nearly added a Super Tuesday win to his online résumé tonight, but fell one spot shy after taking runner-up to oldchilli of Canada, with the latter earning $101,361.66 following a three-handed deal.

The Super Tuesday has been holding steady of late in terms of field size, with this week’s 596 entrants marking a small increase from last week and above the 573 players or so the $1,050 buy-in tournament has averaged drawing this year. The $596,000 prize pool well exceeded the event’s $400K guarantee, too, with the top 72 finishers dividing the cash.

They were nearly five-and-a-half hours in by the time the money bubble burst, and with 72 remaining KatePkrPro led the counts. Playing from Canada, KatePkrPro was chasing yet another Super Tuesday final table this year after finishing fourth in April and then fifth in August.

Also still with chips was a short-stacked Johnny Lodden, although a half-hour later the Team PokerStars Pro’s tourney run would come to a screeching halt after running A8 into Vitor “keyhell” Biros’s AK to be sent railward in 47th for a $2,384 cash.

Two hours after that they were down to 18, with KatePkrPro having become a short stack and Pressor and oldchilli virtually tied for the chip lead.

Robert “pokerguru740” Kuhn (18th), Dmitriy “yurasov1990” Yurasov (17th), and Nicolas “PKaiser” Fierro (16th) next went out, each earning $4,768. Vitor “keyhell” Biros (15th), ^My H3r0^ (14th), and theZeus333 (13th) followed, taking away $5,960 apiece. Then CapitanB (12th), Pascal “Pfäffchen” Hartmann (11th), and Vlad “dariepoker” Darie (10th) were successively eliminated, with $7,152 going into each player’s account as a result.

With KatePkrPro still hanging on and oldchilli having assumed a huge chip lead with nearly 1 million chips, another talent-laden Super Tuesday final table was underway.

Seat 1: Rocco “Sephirot88” Palumbo (Slovenia) — 348,596
Seat 2: KatePkrPro (Canada) — 170,463
Seat 3: Pressor (Russia) — 166,925
Seat 4: Joaquín “elmelogno4″ Melogno (Uruguay) — 505,288
Seat 5: oldchilli (Canada) — 974,216
Seat 6: russiadgl (Russia) — 392,320
Seat 7: Sguirre1 (Russia) — 200,847
Seat 8: NhFy (Sweden) — 84,170
Seat 9: Joe “floes” Serock (Mexico) — 137,175

Among the other short stacks at the final table was one-time SCOOP champion Joe “floes” Serock. Alas for Serock, shortly after the tourney crossed the nine-hour mark his reraise-shove for his last 21 big blinds with 66 was met with a call by Sguirre1 who held 99, and five cards later Serock was done in ninth.

Another short stack, NhFy, would fall soon thereafter in eighth, thus coming up shy of adding yet another Super Tuesday title after winning one in 2012 and another in 2013, not too mention a SCOOP as well three years back. Down to less than 60,000 with the blinds at 4,000/8,000, NhFy picked up AQ but ran into Pressor’s AK, with a jack-high board then ending NhFy’s night.

With seven left oldchilli had slipped back to the pack while Joaquín “elmelogno4″ Melogno had moved out in front. Melogno would soon add further to his stack after knocking out KatePkrPro in seventh when the latter’s K9 failed to catch up to elmelogno4’s 55.

Then russiadgl would commit a stack of about 16 big blinds with AJ, run into oldchilli’s AQ, and five cards later they were down to five.

Rocco “Sephirot88” Palumbo next became short on chips, and appeared likely destined for a fifth-place finish after pushing all in for just over eight blinds with A4 and getting called by Sguirre1 who had A9. But after ace came on the flop a four fell on the river, and Palumbo kept his seat.

The tourney crossed the 10-hour mark, at which point Melogno led the final five with more than 1.25 million, nearly half a million ahead of nearest foe oldchilli.

Soon came a hand beginning with a raise by Pressor and call by elmelogno4, then an all-in shove by Sguirre1 for nearly 100,000 (about eight big blinds) called by both opponents.

Pressor and Melogno checked the 948 flop, then Melogno called a small leading bet from Pressor after the 6 turn. The river then brought the 8 and another bet from Pressor, to which Melogno responded with an all-in push called by Pressor right away.

Melogno showed 55 and the all-in Sguirre1 1010, but both were behind Pressor’s full house with 99. Sguirre1 was out in fifth, and Pressor had become the new leader.

Twenty minutes later another big hand involving pocket pairs would result in another knockout. By then oldchilli was back in front, who after min-raising from under the gun saw Rocco “Sephirot88” Palumbo three-bet from the button. The blinds got out, oldchilli pushed all in, and Palumbo called, committing the entire 453,878 with which he’d begun the hand.

Palumbo appeared in excellent shape with 1010 versus oldchilli’s 33. But a trey came on the flop to give oldchilli a set, and with no help thereafter Sephirot88 was out in fourth.

Soon the final three stopped proceedings to talk about a deal, with oldchilli leading with more than 1.75 million, Pressor next with about 772,000, and Joaquín “elmelogno4″ Melogno third with about 455,000. “ICM”-based figures were produced — leaving $8,000 for which to play — and after Pressor was willing to give Melogno a little extra a deal was made.

On just the second post-deal hand, Pressor was all in with A10 versus oldchilli’s AJ, and after the Q7975 runout they were suddenly down to two.

That gave oldchilli a better than 5-to-1 advantage over elmelogno4 to start heads-up play with 2,514,475 to Melogno’s 465,525. On the fourth hand between them, oldchilli min-raised to 32,000 from the button, Melogno three-bet to 91,000, and oldchilli called. The flop came 4Q6, Melogno led for 70,500, oldchilli shoved, and Melogno called with the 334,025 he had left behind.

It was AJ for Melogno whose ace-high was ahead of oldchilli’s gutshot draw was 87. But the turn ws the 7 and river the 8, making two pair for oldchilli and stopping Melogno just short of the win.

Congratulations to oldchilli for a Super Tuesday win and six-figure score, and kudos as well to Joaquín “elmelogno4″ Melogno and Pressor, both of whom earned handsome paydays as well following the three-handed deal.
