Just as expected, the 2014 ACOP Main Event final table has slowed down dramatically since the speedy double elimination to kick off the day.
Seven-handed play has now been going for around four hours and so now is a great time to take a look back at the last ACOP Main Event final table.
There are two similarities brewing here.
Of course, there is the fact that Sunny Jung was last year’s champ and is now at is again, while it’s also shaping up to be another marathon fight to get to finish.
There were 203 total entrants in the 2013 ACOP Main Event and after a very quick Day 4, the final table was set with Yifan Zheng leading the way with 1,513,000 in chips. Jung, the eventual champion, started with only 270,000 – the second shortest of the final nine.
The big talking point at the time was that the average stack to kick off the final table was an unprecedented 112 big blinds.
Play ended up going on so late that an extra day had to be added to the Main Event with Jung having to return to fight it out heads-up with Devan Tang for the title. In fact, the big blind average when play reached heads-up at 2:30 a.m. was 126 big blinds.
When the two players returned it was Jung with a slight chip lead over Tang and it was another gruelling battle, with the lead swapping back and forth several times before Jung steamrolled over Tang to win the title.
The eventual final hand of the tournament saw Jung three-bet to 300,000 out of the big blind after Tang had opened the button to 100,000. Tang then four-bet to 500,000 and Jung moved all in, having Tang covered.
Tung had around 1.5 million behind (30 big blinds) and called it off with A♠ Q♣ which was dominated by Jung’s A♥ K♥ . Jung ended up making the nut flush and it was all over.
Jung claimed HK$4,352,000 (~US$560,000) for that result and very interestingly has not posted a single score since then. That will change in the 2014 ACOP Main Event and we are even looking at a situation where Jung’s last two recorded results will be winning the same massive event in back-to-back years!
Right now, during seven-handed play in this year’s event, it’s looking like history might be repeating itself. Not only with Jung’s chances at winning a second event, but also with the length of the final table.
The players don’t quite have as much of a huge big blind average as last year, but it’s not that far off the mark. There are also a lot more chips in play this time around, with 291 total entrants instead of 203.
