We return for Day 3, with 45 hopefuls left to battle today from the 692-entry field in the LAPT Peru Grand Final Main Event. Atop the counts is two-time LAPT champion Nacho Barbero, seeking to make history again in Lima by becoming the tour’s first three-time winner.

Such seemed hardly likely when on the stone-cold bubble yesterday, one spot away from the cash. Especially when Barbero found himself all-in and at risk with A♥ K♦ against an opponent’s 10♣ 8♣ .

A flop of 5♦ 5♣ 3♣ actually made Barbero a slight underdog in the hand, having to sweat 15 outs through two more streets. But fade all those outs he did, then soon more chips came his way to give him a leading stack of 898,000 to start Day 3.

Of course, to get to tomorrow’s final table and perhaps claim that third title, Barbero will have to fade many more obstacles presented by his 44 remaining opponents, with Carlos Sobenes (721,000), David Perez Bautista (575,000), Jakob Kyrian (504,000), Thiago Nishijima (500,000), and Osvaldo Lewis (480,000) returning to big stacks as well. See full start-of-day-3 chip counts here.

Lima was the site of Barbero’s second LAPT title in 2010 when he established a record with his second tour triumph, one he held alone until the most recent event when Fabian Ortiz won his second at LAPT7 Panama. Barbero hopes to reclaim that record and make history again here in Miraflores.

Ready for Day 3

Play begins at 12 noon and probably won’t be ending for quite some time as the plan at present is to play down to an eight-handed final table. Stick close to find out who among those who remain make it through to tomorrow’s finale and a continued chance at the $197,540 first prize.
