Sergio Aido was eliminated a few minutes ago, ruining what would have been a bloody good post about the room-mates still involved in this EPT Grand Final Main Event. You see, only about five weeks ago, Aido was deep at EPT Malta, alongside Javier Zapatero, who is one of the men he shares a house with in Hammersmith, West London.
Here in Monaco, Aido was going deep again, and once again he was alongside a house-mate. This time it is Adrian Mateos, the World Series of Poker Europe champion, and the most decorated of the Spanish exiles in that corner of the British capital.
It’s bad enough to continue to get knocked out slightly short of the final table, but it’s even worse in Aido’s case. He keeps getting outlasted by his flatmates, so can’t even come into the living room after a long flight, drop his suitcase down and tell a loving family how tough it’s all been.
That said, Aido assured us that he has the biggest bedroom in their house, the benefit of having done the leg-work when they were looking for Spanish Crushers HQ. So he can at least luxuriate in his misery (and, of course, relish his piece of whatever swaps they arrange between them).
The post that will never be written would also have noted that Dzmitry Urbanovich and Jose Carlos Garcia are room-mates. That’s in the British sense: they have been rooming together in Monaco, splitting the cost of a hotel room between them.
Urbanovich has already won more than €1 million from this festival for second place in the Super High Roller event, and has already guaranteed a further payday from the Main Event. But it’s Garcia with the biggest chip stack of the pair now. He has more than 750,000 while Urbanovich has approximately one seventh of that. It’s still open to conjecture who is going to bring the most back to their room at the end of this week.
Room-mates actually have a pretty good record on the EPT, ever since Brandon Schaefer and Carl Olson headed from Seattle to Deauville in Season 1. They were friends and room-mates from home and both qualified for the EPT in France on PokerStars. When everybody else was knocked out, only Olson and Schaefer were left.
Something similar happened in Barcelona in Season 4, when Sander Lyloff and Mark Teltscher, who were friends from backgammon circles, ended up heads up. They were sharing a room in Catalonia and crammed a combined €1.75 million to that particular room’s safe.
If we assume Urbanovich is going to the final table — a pretty safe assumption, despite his small stack — Garcia can join him there are at least match what Olson/Schaefer, Lyloff/Teltscher managed before.
Aido/Mateos/Zapatero, your time will come.
