Romain Paon: Biggest stack after Day 1B

With the schedules at EPT festivals these days now filled with Super High Rollers, Special High Rollers, Regular High Rollers and Shark Cages, among much other fun, one could be forgiven for forgetting what brought us all here in the first place.

But the tournaments that still carry the title “main” event do so for a reason. Although they simmer gently during their opening stages, away from the bang and bluster of the other showpieces, they still crackle with excitement as the heat is turned up.

Today was Day 1B of the €10,000 Main Event at the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo®Casino EPT Grand Final. It is, in relative terms, still early. But the door remained open all day allowing 332 players to filter in, passing about 130 who were already out. There were superstars, former champions and million-dollar men heading in both directions throughout.

Before we take a closer look at the notable names who tried their skill through eight levels today, we’ll remember the top line: the chip leader is Romain Paon, of France, who bagged up 161,900.

He has about 20,000 less than yesterday’s leader, Jose Carlo Garcia, who had 182,800 at day’s end, and will be leading the 200-odd who will return for a run at the big money.

On that subject, Monaco welcomed back Erik Seidel today, fresh from his marvellous victory in the Super High Roller event yesterday. Seidel, however, couldn’t make it through and departed before the close.

The man Seidel beat heads up yesterday, Dzmitry Urbanovich, was also back at the coal-face, but the young Pole opted for the One Day €50k tournament, from which he was eliminated late in the day. That frees him up to play the Main Event (for which he has already qualified on PokerStars) and will likely do so tomorrow from noon.

Liv Boeree and Vanessa Selbst took their places in the Main Event today too, and spent most of the afternoon sitting next to one another. They were both still there at the end, with 30,100 (Boeree) and 66,200 (Selbt).
