Mike McDonald sitting next to Steve O’Dwyer, Anton Wigg next to Dominik Nitsche. Joni Jouhkimainen across from Bryan Paris. You’d be forgiven for thinking this was part of the High Roller event but many of the players, having busted the €25,000 tournament, have decided to add to the circa 1,200 entries so far – nearly three-quarters of them choosing Day 1b to make an appearance.

Definitely not the High Roller

With that many entries the remaining three tables of the High Roller have been forlornly squashed into the far corner of the lower tournament room as the space gets used up by a thriving mixture of PokerStars qualifiers, local Italian players, ex-€25k High Rollers, champions of the EPT, IPT, UKIPT, Eureka, Estrellas and APPT – everyone seems to be involved today.

Searching for a chip leader at this point seems to be a meeting of needle and haystack, for one thing the players are still separated into two rooms and likely to be that way for most of night. They certainly have a long way to go to match Berardino Palmieri’s 340,800 from last night, the Italian having nearly twice as much as anyone else at this point (and over six(!) times the average).

“I want you to play IPT Malta!”

Meanwhile as the stacks and numbers mount up, so do the exits. Farid Chati, Ariel Celestino, Madis Muur, Georges Yazbeck, Giuseppe Incognito (the irony), Joao Barbosa and Shyam Srinivasan are among the latest players to have been eliminated.

IPT Malta update:

– The board says 902 entries for Day 1b but this is subject to confirmation
– Players are about to go on a 75-minute dinner break
– Martin Jacobson, Steve O’Dwyer, Kitty Kuo, Mike McDonald were all late entries to this event
– Ten levels are being played today with the tournament scheduled to finish around midnight

To get all the latest news, chip counts and payouts, don’t forget to download the EPT App on both Android or IOS. We reckon all the late entries came because they knew how big the field was – thanks to the EPT app.
