Home / Uncategorized / Weekend Review: Award winners and tournament winners

What with Jason Somerville joining Team PokerStars, and the news out of Beverly Hills that three members of the PokerStars family had won awards at the American Poker Awards, there was already plenty to read about over the weekend even before the Sunday Majors kicked off. But kick off they did, with wins for NHalabardzie and dntrvrmplz.

As Martin Harris wrote, NHalabardzie’s win came after some tricky deal discussions and an 18 hand heads-up duel that left him with the $192,500 first prize. Meanwhile dntrvrmplz struck a blow for all those players who reject vowels in their username, winning $83,923 in the Warm-Up with a similar two-way deal. He beat wywrotX of Canada heads-up, as David Aydt reported.

But like I said earlier, there were a few other diversions this weekend, starting with the news from last Friday that Jason Somerville had joined the team, and introduced what is something of a new era for PokerStars involving Twitch.

If you’re not already up to speed with Twitch it’s a video streaming platform designed for e-gaming, and it’s where Somerville will be playing every day for the next 70 days from March 1 (so make that 69 days). Each day, starting at 5pm GMT, Somerville will be streaming his play on Twitch, which you can follow on the PokerStars Twitch channel. You can follow his play, interact and maybe even learn a few things form one of the biggest talents in the game.

Somerville was also one of many PokerStars people nominated for awards at the inaugural American Poker Awards, held at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills on Friday night. In a lavish ceremony there were three PokerStars winners. Daniel Negreanu took the Best Poker Ambassador award, the same award he’d picked up at the British Poker Awards just days earlier.

Vanessa Selbst was the best rated female player, according to the GPI rankings, while PokerStars Blog editor Brad Willis collected the award for Media Content of the Year for two articles written during last year’s World Series of Poker.

So it was a pretty busy weekend even before the weekend started. Check out the Twitch feed which is well worth a look, and in the meantime checkout all the weekend’s winners at the link below.
