As the stakes go up, the casualties are high, but the rewards are great for those who can survive. Some even thrive in such savage circumstances, like those who become a member of an exclusive Day 1 club – the 100k club.

As play enters the last level for the night, the current leader of the club is Roman Bláha, the same man who dominated “A round with Hof” earlier on. He’s the leader as he has the most chips with 175,000. Simple. His fellow members include:

Hasan Kaylan – 150,000
Michael Weber – 102,000
Fabian Guzzo – 145,000
Sven Wendt – 105,000
Nikolai Bozic – 160,000
Oliver Weis – 120,000
Wouter Van der Peijl – 108,000

Bláha leading the way

These players thrive the misfortune, or weakness of others. It’s not pretty, its just Darwinism, poker style. Those not fit enough included:

Marcin Retkowski, Somphong Daoheuang, Vasile Strugari, Simon Mikek, Oliver Heppchen, Jan Klein, Rene Kodlin, Andreas Müller, Gusti Sas, Michael Steinke, Patrick Sommer, early chip leader Martin Kabrhel and the 100 Grand Challenge winner Krzysztof Czerwinski.

No festival double for Czerwinski

Marius Pospiech came into this tournament on the back of a victory in Dortmund 11 days ago. It’s almost as if he learnt and evolved into a poker player who new how to survive. Not long ago he was down to 10,000 but he managed to double that up and then nearly triple up from there.

He opened from mid position before Marco Nieckarz three-bet and Jeffrey Brouwer four-bet all in for 20,000. Pospiech moved all in for 25,100 and Nieckarcz called, having both players covered.

Pospiech: A♣ A♥
Nieckarcz: A♦ 6♣
Brouwer: 9♠ 9♥

The board ran a safe 2♣ Q♥ K♥ J♣ 3♣ to help Pospiech pass the 80,000-mark.
