It may be a rest day in the Aussie Millions Main Event but that doesn’t mean the action stops in the Crown Poker Room. Quite the opposite in fact, as a very busy day greets us this fine Saturday in Melbourne.
There are two Aussie Millions gold championship rings set to be awarded today with the $2,500 Six-Handed Shot Clock set to reach its conclusion in the main poker room, while over in the custom-built TV studio in the Exhibition Hall, the $100,000 Challenge will capture plenty of media attention. It’s a stacked final table line up with Ole Schemion leading the way towards the top prize of $1,870,000.
The $100,000 Challenge final table gets under way at 2:15pm so we’ll pick up our own coverage of that event a little later in the day.
In the meantime, a big field has rolled out for the new event of the day. It’s Event #18 of the 2015 Aussie Millions schedule and one that has been talked up for quite some time now.
It’s called the “Deep Freeze” – a name given due to the deep starting stack and blind structures that are so slow that it might even appear that they are frozen! Players start with 20,000 in chips, levels are 60-minutes long, all of the fun levels are included and it’s one of the few Aussie Millions events to run over three days, so this event has a true championship feel to it.
The buy-in is an attractive $1,500 which puts it nicely placed within the reach of recreational players, while still big enough to see the pros take a shot, and with a Saturday afternoon starting day, it should produce a healthy field today.
In addition, the team at the APPT have been supporting this event with online satellites running on PokerStars which have brought in an additional 36 online qualifiers.
The interesting thing about the Deep Freeze is that no one is really sure how many runners it will receive. There’s nothing to compare it to. This is the first year it has been included in the Aussie Millions schedule, so some think it could attract as many as 500 players! While that might be a bit ambitious, it’s probably going to be one of the largest side events on the schedule and will offer a huge prize pool to play for.
In the early stages, it’s hard to get a feel for the numbers as the event is spread over two venues – the main poker room and also the Exhibition Hall. However APPT Live Events Manager Sam Dawson tells us he has been kept extremely busy this morning with players looking to register for the event through the convenience of the PokerStars client.
