Home / Uncategorized / Weekend Review: MicroMillions for some, Sunday Majors for others

There was plenty to keep tabs on this weekend, a busy card as it were with Micro Millions in full swing and the usual Sunday events to provide some familiar entertainment.

On the MicroMillions front, there were 34 events completed as the weekend turned into Monday morning. As you began the school run or your commute to work, El_Dany_doo, from Belgium, was perhaps not telling his boss where he could stick his job, but was at least going to bed as MicroMillion’s most recent winner, $4,361.86 to the good after winning Event #34. When you think that he’d bought in several hours prior for just $5.50 you get some understanding as to while MicroMillions is both hugely popular and hugely profitable for players boasting a bankroll of anything above just a few cents.

Back in the regular world of Sunday tournaments it was ivoelemento occupying top billing, not so much a micro million but one large Sunday one. Some 6,465 players bulked up the prize pool but it was the Brazilian who took the first prize worth $150,936.56 after a three-way deal with second placed duke_of_fluk and stealwave. You can read the full report on the PokerStars Blog.

Likewise in the Sunday Warm-up, the precursor to the million turned up a dramatic finale, a remarkable comeback from an enormous heads-up deficit by eventual winner dr_upswing90 from Germany. He defeated countryman beldarion after he suffered an unlikely collapse to take the first prize of $93,949.42. Read all about his triumph in David Aydt’s Warm-up report.

There were plenty of other notable winners over the weekend, not just confined to the two biggest titles up for grabs.

Team Online’s Naoya “nkeyno” Kihara had a prosperous weekend finishing third in the $215 weekly Razz event (won by Calvin “Cal42688” Anderson) and a fifth place finish in the Sunday 500. However it was the winner of the latter event that struck a chord of Deja vu all over again, won as it was by CrownUpGuy, also known as Fedor Holz, also known as the WCOOP Main Event Champion. He picked up $65,974.50 for this latest win. No sign of his enormous smile fading anytime soon then.

Last but by no means least we should say a word or two on Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu. Winning a MicroMillions title is one thing, a Sunday Million title perhaps even more so. But few will ever be able to rival Negreanu for a glittering record in poker that stretches all the way back to the Clinton Administration, a tenth place finish in $200 event at Orleans in Las Vegas back in 1997.

There was no late night poker back then, no hole cams, no poker tours, no online game. Instead you learned the game slowly and expensively in casinos against grizzled veterans wearing gold bracelets.

About 17 years later and the poker world is almost unrecognisable, albeit for the familiar face of Negreanu. Now he has nearly $30 million in live tournament earnings (that makes him the highest earning player ever), six World Series bracelets and countless other titles and achievements. He’s a pretty nice guy too.

Read about his first ballot success in Las Vegas here where you can also see a shirt tribute video to the man himself.

And if you didn’t win a MicroMillions event, a Sunday Major, or get elected to the Poker Hall of Fame, well there’s always next weekend to put it right.

In the meantime you’ll find the full list of MicroMillions winner below.
